Introduction Cynthia Serrano

Cynthia Serrano

My name is Cynthia Serrano, a senior at the University of Houston - Clear Lake (UHCL) wrapping up my Bachelor of Arts in communication. I am excited to be one of the spring 2021 communication interns at the National Diversity Council! I am passionate about helping others which is how I happened to find my role at the NASA-Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Human Resources. I love hearing people’s stories and learning how I can support them even in difficult situations. This passion also carries over to animals by supporting rescue and foster efforts. Our “fur” family consists of all rescues with medical or behavioral issues that need extra TLC. Many times they were out of options for finding a home, so our family happily stepped in. Just like people, animals can thrive under the right conditions with patience and understanding.

Being in an extremely diverse environment such as NASA, I jumped at this internship opportunity. Houston is such a diverse city and simply by sitting in the cafeteria at JSC during lunch (pre-COVID19) I was always reminded of that awesome fact. Who knew lunch conversations in various languages could be so interesting! The National Diversity Council offers many great resources and educational opportunities. Their mission and vision align with my goals to become a better individual both personally and professionally. Diversity and inclusion awareness is growing and I believe the job is never done in educating ourselves and others. It’s a win-win for all!

This spring, I hope to apply my writing and visual art skills from UHCL to various aspects of public relations, social media, journalism, marketing and advertising while also being exposed to a non-profit organization. I am looking forward to my journey at the National Diversity Council!
